Balloon Arch

Ok, so the blog is called MOSTLY about food. Every so often a non-food item manages to slip its way into the post. I tend to be a random grab bag of artsy stuff. I dabble. What can I say.
Tonight is graduation night at the high school where I teach (Oasis Christian Academy http://www.myacademyoasis.org/). Last night we were decorating for the reception. I was asked to make a balloon arch. Ok, back story. I’ve never made a balloon arch. Ever. I’ve never even attempted to make one before. I did watch a video on Youtube, so pretty much I’m an expert. Also, I may have kind of volunteered my services. As in, “I can make a balloon arch if you need me to.”
Any way, they (and by “they”, I mean the parents of the graduates) asked me to make a balloon arch as an entry way for the graduates to the reception.
NO PROBLEM.
Ok, several problems. 1. I’ve actually never made a balloon arch. 2. I don’t know how many balloons to buy. 3. How long should the tether string be?
Hmmmmmm. Problems indeed.
Well, good news. I bought 3 times as many balloons as I needed. And the helium tank was provided by the parents of the graduates. Yeah!
I tied off 22ft of fishing line to two chairs and began inflating balloons. The first two balloons had holes in them. Grrr. After that the progress went well. And by “well”, I mean that after tying all those balloons I had rubbed the skin off of my index and middle finger of my right hand. The pains of art.
The arch looked weird and lopsided for a while, but as time and balloons passed, it got better. I kept adding more and more, and losing more and more skin.
In the end, it actually looked passable. I’m not so certain how the balloons will hold up over night, but the arch looked good upon completion. That’s all that matters, right?!?!
